The following paragraphs were taken from Mt. Vernon newspapers, The Western Son and The Mt. Vernon Democrat, and compiled in the book ” It Was Written”, published by the Posey County Historical Society in 1983.
Thursday, July 7, 1881
The President of the United States of America, James A. Garfield, has been hit
by an assassin’s bullet on July 2. He was critically injured and hovers near
death at this time. This is the second time in our history that a President has
been gunned down.
The Fourth of July celebration at Black’s Grove was a Hugh success. The
assemblage of citizens was the largest ever in our town. The address by the
Hon. M. W. Pearce was an excellent oratorical effort and was appreciated by an
enthusiastic audience.
Nicholas Joest, Treasurer of Posey County, submitted the report for the year
ending June, 1981. The balance at this time is $75,353, of which $40,000 will be
paid to the several townships during July.
Thursday, July 5, 1906
Thirty-five years ago yesterday, on July 4, 1871, the L & N Railroad Co. Ran its
first train from Evansville to Black’s Grove in Mt. Vernon. A big picnic was
held to celebrate the occasion of the first iron horse in Posey County.
The Chautauqua, under the management of E. G. Bauman, opened in this city
Thursday morning.
Thursday, July 9, 1931
Posey County sweltered under the hottest June recorded in 50 years. Several
horses and mules have died in the 95 degree heat.
The Ohio River claimed the life of Melvin Lee Redman,10, son of Mr. And Mrs.
Esco Redman. he was found with his arms clasped around a floating willow branch
in a last desperate effort to save his life. The lad and a friend went swimming
after both boys had been warned not to go to the river. Pallbearers were young
playmates of the drowned boy.
Noah McFadden, 60, a Lynn Township farmer, was instantly killed when his
automobile was struck by an L & N train. He is survived by his wife, née
Florence Gano, three sons, Charles, John Hanie and Merle, a daughter, Mrs. Hazel
Boemle, two brothers, and one sister.
Orvan Hall, editor of the Mt. Vernon Democrat, was elected exalted ruler of the
