From 1797 until 1801 and again from 1918 until 1920 the U.S. had federal laws, called “sedition” laws, outlawing any speech or any publication that the President of the United States deemed abusive, “disloyal, profane or scurrilous towards the United States government, or that caused ………………..

Those convicted under these “sedition” laws could be imprisoned for two to twenty years, and suffer crippling financial penalties, intended to destroy their publications. A grandson of Benjamin Franklin, Benjamin Franklin Bache, was one of those prosecuted for criticizing the federal government.  So was that famous Hoosier union leader Eugene Debs.

When people tell you Fascism can’t happen in America, tell them it already has. And we have been fighting against it since the days of the founders. America has the best system of government in the world, but we have had to work and fight for it.

Most of the credit for our wonderful system goes to our free press. The free media regulates itself through intense competition in the market place of news and ideas.
.
Politicians who want to discredit and destroy our free press, are the enemies of liberty and the enemies of our wonderful American system of government.
