War on Christmas?

Just thinking about some odds and ends. One of them is the war on Christmas, that I hear right wingers complain about so much. My observation is, if there is a war on Christmas, then Christmas struck the first blow against humanity. I look about me at Christmas time, and what do I see among the celebrants of Christmas?

All around me, I see…………………………….

………………………………………………………………………….. drunken fights and quarrels, car wrecks, and unnecessary high interest debt. I see families and individuals destroyed by the stress of the Christmas debt, not to mention exposing the kids to drunkenness. I will never get a job writing blurbs for Hallmark cards, but in all honesty, that is what I see at Christmas.

That and silly expensive gifts, that no one actually wants. The last Christmas before Suzanne and I swore off  buying each other Christmas gifts, she bought me an electric key warmer for my car keys.  And, I surprised her with a set of porcelain Neti Pots in ascending sizes.

Then, we discovered our vehicle already had “no key needed” electric door locks, and that  Suzanne lacked enthusiasm for standing on her head and pouring warm salt water up her nose. No more Christmas gifts between the two of us since then. We blow some money on Honey Sue and the grand kids, because they are kids, and we enjoy instilling greed in their little hearts. But we don’t pretend, there is any thing spiritual or even sane about doing it.

We watch other family relations, friends and neighbors run up the credit cards for glitzy  junky Christmas gifts, then pour themselves full of booze to pretend they are joy filled by the season.  For adult Christmas gift giving, it is Bah Humbug for me!

I am not superstitious, and if I ever become superstitious, I hope to select a superstition, that does not promote debt and drunkenness. But then, that’s just me.
